June news from Clarendon Street Vets
We hope you are all enjoying the lovely sunny weather.
We are busy getting ready for the Stapleford Weekend Dog Show, on Saturday June 28th at 5.30pm. Classes include Cutest pup, Golden Oldie and Best Rescue. There will be prizes for the winner of each class and then a ‘Best in Show’ grand finale. For full details or to sign up, visit Dog Show | Stapleford Weekend It promises to be a really fun event, and we look forward to seeing some of you there.
The other big news is that we are very close to launching our subscription wellness plan ‘Paws and People’. There will be a cat plan, a small dog plan (<25kg) and a large dog plan (>25kg) All routine flea and worm treatments and annual vaccinations will be included, along with one additional free consultation a year and a 10% discount off everything!
We wanted to do things a little bit differently and give back to the community, so we will also be donating a pound a month from each subscription to a selection of local charities. We will be choosing three charities per quarter, so if you would like to suggest a good local cause, please let us know.
The hot weather looks set to continue, and we know some of our patients really struggle in the heat. Early morning and later in the evening are the best times to walk your dog on hot summer days. Some dogs are great at self-regulating and will move into the shade when they start to overheat. Others are not quite so sensible and may need reminding to keep out of the sun or contained in a cool room in the hottest part of the day. Signs of heat stroke include dribbling, excessive panting, and collapse. If you notice any of these signs in your pet, get them out of the heat and contact us straight away. Avoid the temptation to cool them down too quickly with ice or really cold water as this can cause shock and further complications.
Cats and small pets also need extra care on the hottest days. Light coloured cats (and dogs) can be prone to sunburn which can lead to more serious conditions in later life. Sun block can be applied to protect vulnerable areas such as the tips of ears and noses. Make sure the accommodation of any small pets, both indoor and outdoor, is sited in the shade, and that pets have access to fresh water at all times. We also recommend checking the back end of rabbits and guinea pigs daily, as flystrike can develop very quickly, is very unpleasant and sometimes fatal.
If you have questions or concerns about any aspect of your pets health or would like to know more about Paws and People, please do get in touch. We are always very happy to hear from you.
With very best wishes,
Harriet, Patrick and all the Clarendon Street Vets team.
